  • I cannot recommend Superior Pools & Spas highly enough! From our very first consultation to the final hand-off. Ahmed, Khaled and entire team were very professional, friendly and incredibly skilled. The communication throughout the entire construction process was fantastic—we were kept informed every step of the way. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are stunning. If I ever need to build or renovate a pool again I would not hesitate to call Superior Pools & Spas.

  • We are really happy we went with Ahmed and Khalid at Superior Pools. They were the first to turn up to quote, pricing was reasonable and communication was very easy. Their team was very hardworking and respectful, working through Ramadan earlier this year and up our 50 or so steps up to the pool! Nothing was too difficult for them and we’re really happy with the result given the age of the existing pool, access and irregular shape. Our new pool filter enclosure is also very soundproof and some problematic pipes repositioned. They have a great team, are honest and we highly recommend them if you are considering a pool renovation! Thanks guys!

Local know-how

Building a pool in East Killara: what to plan for

What the NSW planning maps show in East Killara, what tends to come up on blocks across the North Shore, and what we check before we quote.

The North Shore is leafy and often steep, with established gardens, protected trees and heritage conservation areas across several councils. Pools here are usually fitted into a sloping garden rather than a flat backyard.

  • Bush fire prone land

Parts of East Killara are bush fire prone land. There a pool needs a bush fire check before it can be approved as complying development, and the most exposed blocks need a development application instead. We check your address before we quote.

  • Trees

Removing or digging near a protected tree needs council consent, so the pool’s position is planned around the trees first.

  • Slope and sandstone

Sloping blocks over sandstone often need engineering, retaining walls and smaller machines to get in.

Step by step

How a new pool is built, in order

From the design and approval to the first swim, in the order the work happens on site.

  1. 1

    Design and approval

The shape, size, interior and equipment are settled, then the pool is approved through complying development or a development application.

  2. 2

    Excavation

The hole is dug and shaped, with retaining or engineering where the block slopes or there is rock.

  3. 3

    Steel and plumbing

Reinforcing steel is tied in and the pipes for filtration, the spa and any water features are run.

  4. 4

    The shell

Concrete is sprayed over the steel to form the walls, floor, steps and benches, then left to cure.

  5. 5

    Tiles, coping and interior

Waterline tiles and coping go on, then the interior finish you chose.

  6. 6

    Barrier, fill and handover

With a compliant safety barrier in place and the pool registered, it is filled and the water balanced ready to swim.

Questions

Common questions

What people ask us about pool construction before they book.

What it costs: the full guide
Does access to my yard change the build?

Yes. How machinery and concrete reach the yard affects the method and the price, so side access, driveways and neighbouring fences matter.

Do I need council approval for a new pool?

Every new in-ground pool needs approval before it is built. Many Sydney pools qualify for complying development, approved by council or a private certifier; others need a development application, for example on heritage, bush fire prone or flood-affected land. We arrange the approval as part of the job.

How long does it take to build a pool?

Usually 8 to 12 weeks on site once the approval is through: excavation, steel, the concrete shell, then plumbing, tiling, coping and the interior. Rock, tight access and wet weather can add time, and the approval itself takes a few weeks before work starts.

Can you build a pool on a sloping block?

Yes. Concrete is the usual choice for a slope because the shell is formed to suit the ground. A sloping or rocky block can need retaining walls and engineering, which adds to the cost, so it is worth knowing early.

What has to happen before a new pool can be used?

In NSW a pool must have a compliant child-resistant barrier and be registered on the NSW Swimming Pool Register before it is used. The barrier is usually certified as part of the pool’s approval.

Concrete or fibreglass?

Fibreglass is quicker to install and costs less to start with, but you choose from set shapes and sizes. Concrete is built to your design and suits awkward blocks. Our guide to concrete and fibreglass pools compares them in detail.
