Pool refurbishment and remodelling

Changing the pool, not just its surface

When an older pool in the Inner West no longer suits the house, remodelling it is often a better answer than starting again. We reshape the shell, add steps or seating, repair the structure and renew the interior and surrounds. Send a few photos for a free quote.

Refurbishment goes further than a new interior. An old kidney-shaped pool can be squared off, a deep end raised, wide entry steps or a bench seat formed inside the existing shell, and failing structure repaired before the new finish goes on.

Local know-how

Pools in the Inner West: what to plan for

Inner West yards are small and access is tight: terraces, semis and narrow lots, many in heritage conservation areas. Pools here are usually plunge or lap pools, and getting machines in is part of the plan.

  • Tight access

With no side access, excavation is done by small machines, by hand or with a crane over the house, which the quote allows for.

  • Heritage areas

In a heritage conservation area a pool can be complying development only in limited cases, so it often needs a development application.

  • Small pools

A plunge pool, a lap pool along the boundary or a spa makes the most of a narrow yard.

Questions

Common questions

What people ask us about pool refurbishment and remodelling before they book.

Does a remodel need approval?

Usually. Changing a pool’s shape, size or structure is building work, approved as complying development through a private certifier or by council. We arrange it before work starts, and the barrier has to meet the current standard when the pool is finished.

Can a pool be made smaller or shallower?

Yes. New walls can be formed inside the old shell to shorten it or change its shape, and a deep end can be raised by forming a new floor over the old one. Both are tied into the existing structure with new steel.

How long does a remodel take?

Most take four to eight weeks on site, after the approval: breaking out, formwork and steel, concrete, then rendering, tiling and the new interior. The size of the change and the weather decide where in that range a job sits.

Is a remodel cheaper than a new pool?

Usually, because the excavation and most of the shell are already there. A remodel with structural change typically starts around $25,000, while a new concrete pool starts around $45,000.
