Pool repairs

Fix it before it spreads

A crack in a pool in the Eastern Suburbs, a falling water level or a few loose tiles are worth fixing early. Send us photos of the problem and we will tell you what it is likely to involve.

Water gets into cracks, behind loose tiles and under hollow render, and each summer makes the damage bigger. Repaired early, most of these problems stay small and the rest of the interior keeps its life.

Local know-how

Pools in the Eastern Suburbs: what to plan for

The Eastern Suburbs run from harbourside slopes to beachside streets, with sandstone close to the surface, steep blocks and some of Sydney’s tightest access. Salt air near the coast and heritage streets are common.

  • Rock and access

Sandstone is broken out by machine, often small machines or a crane, which is why access is priced after a site visit.

  • Salt air

Near the coast, coping, grout and fittings are chosen for salt exposure.

  • Steep blocks

A steep block needs engineering, and often retaining walls or a raised edge on the low side.

Step by step

A crack repair, start to finish

What happens on a crack repair, from draining the pool to the finished surface.

  1. 1

    Drain and look

The pool is emptied so every crack, hollow patch and loose tile can be seen and marked.

  2. 2

    Chase out

Each crack is ground out into a clean channel, so the repair has sound concrete to bond to.

  3. 3

    Fill

The channels are cleaned and filled with a pool repair mortar, worked in and levelled.

  4. 4

    Finish

The repairs cure, then the surface is finished to suit the interior before the pool is refilled.

Questions

Common questions

What people ask us about pool repairs before they book.

What it costs: the full guide
Can a crack come back after a repair?

A crack that's chased out and filled is sealed, but if the ground or the structure is still moving it can open again nearby, so the repair takes in why it cracked.

Is it worth fixing a small leak?

Yes. Water escaping into the ground can wash out what supports the shell and paving, and the loss adds up on the water bill.

Do you find leaks too?

Pinpointing a leak is a specialist’s job: a leak detection company pressure-tests the pipes and dye-tests the shell and fittings. Once the leak is found, we repair it, whether it is a crack in the shell, a skimmer box or a fitting.

Will a repaired crack show?

Usually a little: a patch rarely matches an aged interior exactly. If the surface is near the end of its life anyway, repairing the cracks and resurfacing at the same time gives an even finish.
