Pool tiling and coping

Tiles that stay on

Our NSW licence covers wall and floor tiling as well as pool building, so we retile pools in the Eastern Suburbs ourselves: new waterline tiles, full mosaic interiors and the coping around the edge. Send a few photos for a free quote.

Pool tiles live underwater, in the sun and through every change in water chemistry, so they fail where the bed underneath wasn’t prepared or the adhesive and grout weren’t made for submerged work. Most retiling jobs start by finding out why the old tiles came loose, and when only a few have, a tile repair re-fixes them on a sound bed.

Local know-how

Pools in the Eastern Suburbs: what to plan for

The Eastern Suburbs run from harbourside slopes to beachside streets, with sandstone close to the surface, steep blocks and some of Sydney’s tightest access. Salt air near the coast and heritage streets are common.

  • Rock and access

Sandstone is broken out by machine, often small machines or a crane, which is why access is priced after a site visit.

  • Salt air

Near the coast, coping, grout and fittings are chosen for salt exposure.

  • Steep blocks

A steep block needs engineering, and often retaining walls or a raised edge on the low side.

Questions

Common questions

What people ask us about pool tiling and coping before they book.

What it costs: the full guide
Can new tiles match my old ones?

Exact matches are rare on older pools, because tile ranges change. That's why waterline tiles are usually replaced as a full band rather than patched.

What usually fails first, the tiles or the grout?

Usually the grout. Water chemistry and age wear it down, and once it goes, water gets behind the tiles and they start to lift.

How long does retiling take?

New waterline tiles usually take a few days to a week, depending on how much water has to come out and how the old tiles come off. A fully tiled interior takes longer, typically two to four weeks, with time for the adhesive and grout to cure before the pool is filled.

Can waterline tiles be replaced without emptying the pool?

Often the water only needs to come down below the tile line. If tiles further down or the render behind them have failed, the pool has to be emptied.
